About Richard Winn Academy:
Richard Winn opened its doors in 1966 and has served as an important college-preparatory, educational resource for Fairfield County, as well as neighboring counties. Our student body of over 340 enjoys the 10:1 student/faculty ratio, a family atmosphere, and a rigorous academic program. Traditionally, approximately 80% of the graduating seniors attend 4-year colleges and universities, with around 98% continuing their education at some type of post-secondary institution. Richard Winn offers a comprehensive educational experience for students in three-year-old kindergarten through grade 12.
Richard Winn is an independent, coeducational institution founded by a determined group of parents who demanded excellence and quality in education for their children. Today, that same spirit for providing opportunities for superior education remains constant for the supporters of the school. The zest for life embodied in the more than 700 alumni reflects the same characteristics and standards that our society looks for in its future leaders. RWA has instilled in its alumni the qualities for which employers are searching.
Accreditation:
Richard Winn Academy holds Advanced Accreditation from the South Carolina Independent School Association (SCISA).
Admissions:
Admission to Richard Winn is competitive, based on a student’s previous school records, test scores and personal qualifications, including an interview. The school seeks students of all races, religions, nationalities, and economic backgrounds, and it is committed to nondiscrimination in its admissions policies, educational policies, and in athletic and other programs.
Academic Profiles:
Since the first graduating class in 1968, Richard Winn students have been National Merit Finalists, National Merit Semifinalists, National Merit Commended Students, Robert C. Byrd Scholars, Palmetto Fellows, and Life and Hope Scholars.
Athletics:
Richard Winn employs a full-time athletic director who oversees the athletic program. Varsity sports include girls’ basketball, boys’ basketball, volleyball, softball, football, baseball, coed soccer, and cheerleading. Junior varsity and middle school teams are fielded in most sports. The teams compete in the South Carolina Independent School Athletic Association (SCISAA) and with some nearby public schools.
Clubs and Organizations:
The following clubs are active at Richard Winn: Beta Club, Junior Beta Club, Student Council, Spanish Club, Aerie (yearbook) staff, Poor Richard’s Almanack (newspaper) staff, Rotary Interact Club, Junior Academy of Science, SCISA Quiz Bowl, math teams, geography teams, and spelling bee teams.
Facilities:
Richard Winn is housed in a modern facility located just north of Winnsboro in historic Fairfield County. The school buildings and properties are situated over 26 acres of land and are comprised of a lower school, upper school, and administrative area under one roof. The library, gymnasium, and cafeteria are contained within the main building. A science building with laboratories and classrooms was built in recent years. Several athletic fields are contained within the property.
Academic Performance:
RWA students consistently score above the state of S.C. average on both the SAT and ACT. The top 25% of the class of 2006 scored an average of 1148 on the SAT. The overall SAT average of the class of 2006 was 1043. Performance after leaving RWA is also an important factor in measuring the success of the overall program. Students are tracked through their first semester in college, and two-thirds of the grades received by the class of 2005 after that first college semester were A’s and B’s. The class of 2006 collectively received over $1.4 million in scholarships.
Richard Winn uses the South Carolina Uniform Grading Scale. Due to Richard Winn’s strong academic program and relatively small senior class, a report of class rank would be statistically invalid. Consequently, class rankings are calculated only for in-house use and are generally not included on the school transcript. Only core subjects that are taken for high school credit are used in these calculations, with honors and AP courses given additional weight.
